For Madelon Vriesendrop

Series of four cyanotypes on paper, each 28 x 36 cm, 2023

Exhibition view: Belvedere 21, Wien, 2023 / Photo: Johannes Stoll / Belvedere, Wien

In For Madelon Vriesendorp Schmid departs from the pure formalism of her earlier works. The works are a homage to Dutch illustrator, painter, and architect Madelon Vriesendorp (b. 1945). Schmid draws on Vriesendorp’s best-known illustration and animation Flagrant Délit (In the Act) from 1975, in which the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building lie in bed as though they just had sex, while the Rockefeller Center stands in the doorway. Based on this scene, the geometric surfaces on the cyanotypes seem to interact with each other, while Viktoria Schmid makes the spires dance for Vriesendorp. (Text: Ana Petrovic, exhibition at Belvedere 21, 2023)
